Is your business remarkable? Do you push the envelope? Challenge the status quo? Disrupt your industry?
This is what a purple cow does.
In Seth Godin’s book, Purple Cow, he outlines the characteristics of remarkable businesses, with remarkable being defined as “worthy of a remark”. When you build a business that looks like, sounds like and operates like every other business in your industry, you become common, like the black and brown cows. What happens after you’ve seen your first group of common-looking cows? You start ignoring them.
The premise of the book is if your business is common it’s boring, and you’re being ignored. You should ignore common like the plague; when you’re common you blend in, and you shouldn’t want to be a cookie cutter version of another business. Go the extra mile to be the leader and provide something remarkable.
This book changed my business for the better. I can honestly say that I made significant changes using the case studies in the book that have helped me elevate my offerings.
