“Nobody is supporting me.”
We’ve heard (and said) all of the excuses for not achieving our goals. Why is this so hard to do?
I believe that business owners struggle with achieving goals because they’re not aware of the stages of goals. Just like there are stages of grief and loss that are experienced universally across all walks of life and explain the inevitable process that we move through, I believe that there are stages to goal-setting that we all go through. I imagine it like being on a hamster wheel….
The challenge is that we’re not aware of these stages.
Knowledge of a situation is the first step to being successful in it , so I want to define the five stages of goals so that we’re all aware and can behave accordingly. Because if we’re not setting goals we’re not growing, and that’s unacceptable.
Stage One: Excitement – You’re the queen (or king) of the world because you’ve decided that taking charge of your current situation and making it better! Congratulations!
Stage Two: Focused – You’ve started off strong and have had some early wins so you’re riding high on good feelings. Life is wonderful!
Stage Three: Friction – Life, it happens. If you were running a marathon right now, this would be when the first leg cramp hit. You weren’t prepared for this.
Stage Four: Plateau – So things have slowed down a bit….okay, let’s be honest, you haven’t made any progress in a while. You’re thinking that it might be easier to just go back to your old ways.
Stage Five: Apathy – This sucks. You quit.
These stages are a part of the goal-setting process, and those that know (and plan ahead) will be able to succeed on purpose. Goals are a part of the winner’s journey, and I believe we should be aware of the influences that threaten to deter us. Now that you know, pay attention to where you might be on the hamster wheel and get off if you’re not where you want to be.
