Somebody once said that all press is good press (I may be paraphrasing, but you understand…).
Getting free press for your business is like the keys to the kingdom – we work HARD on our products/services and we want everybody on the planet to know about it and support, right?
So what do you do when it happens through no effort on your part?
In case you missed yesterday’s post, I was recently featured in a book of women in my community that are kicking butt and taking names (okay, maybe not in those words…just go read the post).
This definitely constitutes as free press, so I was NOT going to miss the opportunity to leverage for more exposure/awareness for what I have to offer.
Here are my tried-and-true four steps to leverage free press to boost your business:
- Decide where you want to direct the extra eyes. You’re going to have new people being introduced to you and your products/services as a result of this opportunity, you’d better believe that you’ll be Googled. Where do you want them to land? Website? Social media page?
- Create your own content and create a credibility boost. Now that somebody else has shouted you out for your greatness that should not stop you from doing the same….without being an overly sales-y sleazy pants. Draw an authentic connection between your free press opportunity and your expertise, (this will help you establish yourself as an authority on a higher level than before the opportunity came along…)
- Don’t spend it in one place only. There is social currency that comes with free press; resist the urge to spend it all in only one place. If you want to truly capitalize on your opportunity, exercise some discipline and strategically release content (photos you took, inside information, previously unreleased details, etc.) in the areas that’s most beneficial for you.
- Share, share and share again. Wouldn’t you share an amazing customer testimonial all over the place? Treat this opportunity the same way and share it! Be sure to tag the person/organization responsible for this awesome opportunity and who knows, you just might connect your way to future opportunities 🙂
