I simply can’t stand the thought of you walking around believing falsehoods about the life of a business owner. The decision to start a business is a BIG ONE, and you should arm yourself with as much information as possible. There are a lot of myths surrounding this journey, and I’m here to make sure they’re busted.

You have to know everything about everything about everything. Consider this an exercise in futility. There’s no way you’ll ever know everything about everything. Rather than obsessing about achieving “expert”status before you launch, find someone that already knows what you want to know and offer to barter. You might be surprised at the response.
Passion is all you need. I consider myself to be a passionate person, BUT passion isn’t everything when it comes to starting a business. You have to balance the emotional, passionate side of your hustle with the pragmatic, disciplined side if you want to be successful. Too much of one thing is too much….
You need to have a lot of money. OMG, this is very much not the case. We live in a world where Uber is the world’s largest taxi company and they don’t own any vehicles. The world is changing, technology is making it easier to do business, sometimes with nothing more than a computer and internet connection.
You need to have an “office”. WRONG. Even if people in your industry traditionally have an office/workshop to do their business from, you don’t have to jump into that overhead. What can do you instead? Well, if your customers can’t come to you, go to your customers! Offer mobile or virtual services, deliver or ship your products or host live events regularly so you can have that face-to-face connection.
You’ll be a millionaire in 10 minutes. It’s easy to look at your entrepreneurial idols and believe that they simply woke up successful. That never happens. Hard work and time are the keys, there’s no such thing as an overnight success.
There are other myths out there, and I promise we’ll get to those later. For now, I want you to know that you don’t have to know everything, you will need more than passion, you can get this done without investors or going broke, your basement will suffice as a workspace and you shouldn’t go spending the proceeds from your first sale on a Hoverboard.
