From Idea To Impact

What an AI Watchdog Series Should Make You Ask About Your Brand

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been diving into The Atlantic’s AI Watchdog series, a powerful and sometimes unsettling look at how the content we’ve all created (books, videos, articles, social posts) is being scraped, processed, and embedded into the foundation of modern AI tools. The big story is this: Powerful AI tools are being built on top of unpaid, unlicensed, and often unacknowledged work. And many people using those tools have no idea…many do know and don’t care, this conversation isn’t about them.

This isn’t just a tech issue.
It’s a trust issue, a strategy issue, and a business integrity issue, especially if you’re leading a mission-driven brand or building GPT-powered tools with your voice, your process, or your client work. So the question becomes: How do you take advantage of what’s possible without giving away your positioning, your content, or your customer trust?

Let’s talk about what it means to build differently.

The AI Trap Folks Don’t See

When you copy/paste your brand voice guide, messaging framework, or sales copy into a free AI tool—
when you build a chatbot to help with lead gen—
when you test marketing copy through a plugin powered by GPT— you could be doing it in public-facing environments that don’t protect your inputs.

Think of it like this:

  • Custom GPTs  = your private assistant. Trained by you, lives inside your business.
  • Public-facing APIs = open coworking spaces. Other tools connect to GPT but retain, store, or potentially reuse your data.

Whenever I’m asked about the “best” AI tool to use, I always say I’ve stuck with ChatGPT…. it’s familiar, I’m comfortable using it, and:

  • I know how to turn off model training
  • I know how to build my own GPTs inside secure settings
  • I’m not guessing where my data goes or what it powers next

What Does “Building Differently” Look Like?

When I talk about building differently, I mean:

  • Using your own voice, not the average of everything on the Internet
  • Creating content from your brand’s core values, not viral trends
  • Training AI tools that work for you, not on you

Here’s what that gives you:

1. Protection Through Control

You know where your data is going. You choose the container. You own the outcome.

Closed GPT environments allow you to:

  • Safeguard your brand strategy
  • Keep sensitive IP internal
  • Prevent leakage into future model training

Your IP is your edge. Don’t train your tools in a way that turns your advantage into open source.

2. Strategy as the Filter

The true moat isn’t your blog posts or the prompts you use….it’s the system you’ve built, the decisions you make and the lens you apply. That’s what makes your GPT yours. And it’s what keeps your message consistent when everything else is moving fast.

This Is Bigger Than Marketing

I’ve built my consulting work at the intersection of messaging clarity and AI adoption. But lately, I’ve felt the need to speak to something bigger:

If you’re building AI into your brand without clear boundaries, you’re not scaling. You’re exposing.

And if you’re an entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, or marketing lead, this doesn’t mean to stop using AI. It means you need a partner who understands how to:

  • Audit your tools
  • Map what belongs (and doesn’t) in your GPT
  • Align voice, values, and governance
  • Build systems that work inside your business, not on top of it

As AI becomes more embedded into business, I’m not here just to teach tools.
I’m here to help you build with intention. Because trust isn’t created in content. It’s created in systems.

Your AI tools should sound like you, but they should also protect you….and that only happens when strategy leads.

If you’re already using AI—or considering it—but you’re unsure what’s at risk, or what systems will actually support your brand as it grows…

Let’s talk.

🔗 Book a clarity call and let’s assess where your brand stands, and how to move forward with both clarity and control.

Because the tools aren’t slowing down..neither is your vision.
